‘From Security to Resilience’ was the theme for the fourth Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) Conference held in Canberra over 10-13 April 2018. Featuring leading cyber security experts from Australia and abroad, lively and insightful discussions took centre stage covering the latest threats, mitigations and advances in cyber security. Additionally, training sessions were offered for those wanting to take a deeper dive into this rapidly developing global industry.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre is an important Australian Government initiative to ensure that Australian networks are amongst the hardest in the world to compromise. As an information hub to share learnings across the private sector, government offices, academia and international partners, they share a common goal to improve our nation’s resilience against a range of cyber threats.

The major focus this year for the ACSC Conference was on the cyber workforce. With this emerging job market the current ‘hot topic’ I joined the conference to network with a wide range of companies and professionals, all with a passion and keen interest in cyber security. During the conference leading experts presented critical case studies outlining cybercrimes faced across a wide range of industries, led panel discussions for key issues the workforce now faces with the rise of cybercrime, and how their companies are gearing up to combat threats. A common thread of questions throughout the conference included, ‘is our workforce skill-ready to secure our information in the cyber world?’, ‘how can we up-skill our existing professional team to mitigate potential threats?’, and ‘how do we address the immediate skill-gap currently faced in our workforce?’

With new technologies comes new opportunities for professional development and growth. We are only at the beginning of an exciting growth period in the cyber sector.
