60 Minutes with George Negus
Award winning veteran broadcast journalist George Negus was the special guest at Cameron Recruitment’s last corporate breakfast networking event for 2007.
The breakfast series which will resume in 2008 aims to bring together local business and executives and provide entertaining and inspirational discourse on improving business practice from a diverse array of talent.
The capacity crowd at Crowne Plaza, Norwest were entertained by Negus’ informed views on how businesses must adapt to social, political and economic change in order to survive. His insights into the recent federal election and his forecasts on how Australians and businesses will be affected were a strong element of discussion. His views on many international upheavals including environmental, global economies and generational/technology changes were also strongly sought after.
The presentation was designed to give everyone something to think about in relation to how change is becoming increasingly dynamic and radical. Negus, no stranger to personal change and adapting to the demands of the market began his career as a teacher, getting the journalism bug in his late 20’s and beginning his fortunate reporting career at The Australian and The Financial Review. He rose to prominence in the 1980’s as a broadcaster and key reporter on the Nine Network’s 60 Minutes programme, he has since written several books on politics and travel and hosted a number of current affairs programmes.
Negus like many of his broadcast contemporaries has been forced to change with the harsh realities of economic diversity.
Cameron Recruitment was overwhelmed by the support for the breakfast events in 2007 and will continue with an eclectic roster of dynamic
speakers in 2008.

Why the North West is heading
for boom times
When Optus made the decision to move from their established and iconic 34 storey tower headquarters in Miller Street North Sydney, staff were initially agitated at the prospect of moving to North Ryde, an area long considered suburban with limited transport infrastructure.
Optus stakeholders were however delighted, despite the initially hefty costs of investing and building a new “campus style” office to accommodate its 6500 staff, the long term savings and benefits of consolidating premises to one area with room to grow made sense on the balance sheet.
In reality, the North West region, particularly North Ryde has evolved into a burgeoning Silicon Valley since the mid-90’s, attracting leading IT&T powerhouses such as Microsoft, Ericsson, Nortel, Lucent and Avaya. In terms of brand cache, Optus has been the icing on the cake in changing the reputation of the area. More significantly in terms of power, the migration of 6500 new staff into the business area meant that Optus management had the opportunity to negotiate with local council and transport authorities to broker deals for their staff. The new North West train line has been fast tracked with three stations soon opening in Macquarie Park and a dedicated bus service for Optus staff was put in place. Staff attrition did occur due to the move but it has afforded local talent more opportunities.
For many businesses the move to the North West including the Hills district is becoming a very compelling prospect with new business parks such as those in Rhodes and Norwest emerging.
Cameron Recruitment’s own decision to move to the Norwest Business Park was both about where professionals now live and the changing attitudes of business. “Apart from candidates moving to these areas, companies in the Ryde, Hills and Parramatta regions are far more open to communicating their recruitment needs and want to be serviced. Individuals and organisations alike seek professional advice from local experts that can assist them in managing their own career changes” , Cameron Recruitment owner Diane Humphries reveals.
According to the last census results from the Baulkham Hills Shire Council the local workforce has grown by 6899 or 15% to 51,883. While total economic output is estimated at nearly $13 billion, property and business services are leading the growth with 7605 jobs representing $2.3 billion.
The communications and media sector is set to be the next boom industry with AAP moving to Rhodes in 2007 and Foxtel, and Sky TV moving their production and studio facilities last year. The Department of Planning estimates that by 2031 Macquarie Park will have about the same number of workers as North Sydney.
The trend for business centres to evolve outside of the CBD is set to continue. Aside from bringing prosperity to local retail businesses it creates a micro-community where specialised services like recruitment and legal services become paramount. For employees looking for jobs in these areas it is also essential that you seek help from experts that know the local territory, who know the companies thriving there and are networked into the local business community.
