Accounting in the 21st Century
Every business needs an accountant, but what are businesses looking for these days?
The accounting profession has changed significantly from the days of someone ‘looking after the books’. Today new regulations as well as more complex systems have meant a shift in focus to ensuring the integrity of financial data and compliance issues.
As well as this, the status of the ‘humble’ accountant has now grown to considerable levels within organisations when they are frequently asked to become all-round business advisors. As such, organisations rely heavily on talents such as analysis, systems and software knowledge, and above all strong communication skills including persuasion and negotiation.
There are many ways in which you can develop these skills. Here are a few we recommend:
- Be an active member of a professional accounting body such as ICCA, CPA or NIA and keep abreast of industry news through the training, face-to-face networking and literature that they provide.
- Be proactive at work by suggesting more efficient ways to streamline in-house processes; regardless of how small the improvement this demonstrates your interest and abilities in continuous improvement.
- Become part of a project within your organisation (and not necessarily within the accounting team); this will improve your understanding of the bigger picture and ultimately assist you with your business analysis and communication skills.
- Volunteer for both internal and external speaking engagements. These can vary from industry forums to advising local high school students.
Act as a representative for your organisation at industry groups and associations.

A quick guide to salary packaging / salary sacrificing
The Australian Taxation Office
The ATO allows employees to restructure their income by receiving a portion of their salary as an approved benefit. However any such salary packaging must be for future remuneration and cannot be implemented retrospectively.
Why do employees choose salary packaging / salary sacrificing?
As the employee you would salary package or salary sacrifice if you placed greater value on the benefit than its cost to your employer. Because such benefits are paid for from your pre-tax salary you can reduce the amount of taxable cash salary received.
What types of items can be Salary Packaged?
Depending on whether your employer is a non-profit organisation or not, will determine the kinds of benefits that can be provided, however here is a sample of the types of benefits most commonly ‘packaged’ for employees:
- Superannuation (concessionally taxed)
- Motor Vehicles
- Running costs of motor vehicles
- Car parking
- Portable computers, portable printers & business computer software
- Electronic diary and calculator
- Mobile phones
- Briefcase
- Taxi travel to and from work
- Gym membership (in-house)
- Self education expenses
- Home office expenses
- Newspapers and periodicals
- Professional memberships & subscriptions
Like to know more?
At Cameron Recruitment, we notice that on the whole most employees do not spend time researching or negotiating all the packaging items available to them. We recommend you talk with your employer to see what salary packaging currently exists or can be accommodated according to your salary as well as talking to a financial planner or your accountant (if you use an external accountant) to obtain further advice.
