Not All Recruiters Are The Same
Recruitment as a specialised field within the Human Resources function has come a long way in the last 20 years due to the demands of organisations requiring more specialised skills and the diversification within their workforce.
So how do recruitment agencies differ from each other?
To answer this question it is probably best to try and categorise certain ‘types’ of recruiters, although keeping in mind recruitment organisations may be a hybrid of these or offer services other than recruitment.
Search Firms: Working primarily within the executive recruitment market, search firms usually seek candidates that earn at least $200K. There are many different types of search firms from owner-operator specialists to internationally networked operations.
Boutique: Best used to describe an agency that specialises in a particular field, for example ‘pharmaceutical sales’. These businesses may be operated by one individual or a group of consulting staff.
Local: Some recruitment organisations like to service a particular area. At Cameron Recruitment Pty Ltd we focus on candidates that live in the North and West of Sydney as well as service businesses in the growing business districts of Norwest, North Ryde, the greater Hills shire and Parramatta.
Medium-sized: These recruitment firms may operate in a few different fields such as administration, accounting and secretarial. They primarily recruit for roles in the $30K - $100K salary bracket.
Multi-nationals: Recruitment firms can employ thousands of people themselves. In these big agencies the consulting staff work in teams and cover a lot of different industries and job types.
Industrial: Organisations that require blue-collar workers such as warehouse, factory and labouring staff. They usually specialise in both temporary and permanent hiring services.
Retail: This is a fairly new recruitment business that usually operates as a ‘shop front’ and primarily assists people interested in temporary employment such as candidates on working holiday visas. A candidate can walk into the recruitment agency off the street (similar to a travel agency) and be placed in a temporary job that day (depending on any visa restrictions).
On-site: There is a growing trend within large organisations to have recruitment consultants from an external agency work within their own offices as an ‘in-house’ operation.
What makes a good recruiter?
The first thing to ascertain is are they a member of the RCSA? (The Recruitment and Consulting Services Association Ltd).To be a member of this body requires the agency to uphold the code of professional practice. This means that members must observe high standards of ethical behaviour, maintain confidentiality and privacy and act with equity, integrity and social responsibility in all its dealings.
Through being a member of the RCSA, Cameron Recruitment Pty Ltd regularly involves itself in maintaining a high level of professional knowledge both about any industry or legislative changes such as OH&S and legal best practice.
The code of professional practice is on the Cameron Recruitment website and for more information on the RCSA and their code go to their website: www.rcsa.com.au
Also, a professional recruiter will understand the technical job requirements, respond to your application in a timely manner, provide feedback after client interviews as well as assist with salary negotiations and have a clear understanding of qualifications, salary packaging and any taxation issues.
Advantages to using a local recruiter such as Cameron Recruitment Pty Ltd is that we understand candidate motivations such as location and industry preference as well as having strong ties with businesses that are in close proximity to where you live.

Accountants from Overseas: CPA requirements
More than ever before, having completed professional qualifications such as the CPA Programme and being a current member is becoming a mandatory requirement for many roles.
Candidates that have been successful in having their permanent residency visa to Australia granted that wish to apply for membership of CPA Australia must complete the remaining entry level studies before admission.
CPA Australia requires an assessment process to be completed that will advise a candidate whether or not their qualifications are comparable to Australian tertiary qualifications as well as listing the additional studies that must be completed.
There are 12 core curriculum subject areas and they must all be completed before being admitted to CPA Associate membership.
- Accounting systems and processes
- Financial accounting (financial and corporate)
- Management accounting
- Accounting theory
- Commercial law (introductory, including contracts)
- Economics
- Quantitative methods
- Finance (corporate)
- Information systems design and development
- Auditing
- Taxation law
- Company law
Once admitted as an Associate member, candidates must complete the CPA Programme and satisfy requisite work experience before advancing to CPA status.
In general, CPA Australia only assesses academic qualifications and not work experience, however if a candidates’ most recent university qualification was completed over 10 years ago and they are not a member of a professional accounting body, employer testimonials may be provided.
There also exists mutual recognition for members (by examination) of the following associations:
- Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants;
- Institute of CPA Singapore; and
- American Institute of CPAs.
This is a brief summary of CPA Australia’s qualification assessment. For further and detailed advice regarding qualification assessment please contact CPA Australia directly or visit their website:
